A Little Prep Goes a Long Way
Getting ready for a fence installation does not have to be complicated, but a bit of preparation before your crew shows up makes the whole process smoother and faster. Here is everything you need to do to get your yard ready.
Step 1: Know Your Property Lines
Before any fence goes into the ground, it is important to have a general sense of where your property lines are. You do not always need a formal survey, but if there is any uncertainty, especially near a shared boundary with a neighbour, it is worth confirming. Installing a fence, even a small distance onto a neighbouring property, can cause disputes that are costly and stressful to resolve.
If you have your original home survey documents, pull those out before your estimate appointment. They will help us confirm the boundaries and make sure the fence is positioned correctly from the start.
Step 2: Talk to Your Neighbours First
This is one of the most practical steps you can take before installation begins. A quick conversation with your neighbours about your plans avoids surprises and keeps the relationship positive. If the fence runs along a shared boundary, they may even want to contribute to the cost, which is supported under Manitoba's Line Fences Act.
Step 3: Utilities Are Located Automatically — We Handle That
In Manitoba, every fence installation requires a utility locate through Click Before You Dig before any digging begins. This service marks the location of underground gas lines, electrical cables, and other utilities so nothing gets damaged during installation.
At A+ Fences, we handle the utility locate on your behalf as part of every project. You do not need to do anything for this step. We take care of it before we ever break ground.
Step 4: Decide What Happens to Your Existing Fence
If you have an old fence that needs to come down, let us know in advance. A+ Fences handles full demolition and hauling of your existing fence as part of the installation process. We take everything away so you do not have to deal with disposal. Just make sure to mention it when you book so we can factor it into the quote.
Step 5: Clear the Fence Line
Before the crew arrives, walk your fence line and remove anything that could slow things down. Garden beds, planters, decorative borders, landscaping rocks, and low-hanging branches along the fence line should be cleared back. The clearer and more accessible the line is, the faster and cleaner the installation goes.
Step 6: Plan for Equipment Access
We use a mini skid steer that is approximately 37 inches wide to dig post holes. This fits through most standard gate openings and side yards, but it is worth thinking about access before installation day. If there is a tight spot along the fence line, let us know when you book, and we will plan around it.
Step 7: Make Sure Someone Is Home
On installation day, it helps to have someone available, at least at the start of the job, to confirm placement, review any last details, and address any questions that come up on site. We communicate throughout the project, but having someone reachable makes everything go more smoothly.
Ready to Get Started?
A well-prepared yard means a faster, cleaner installation and a result you will be happy with from day one. If you have any questions about what to expect from the process, we are always happy to walk you through it before the work begins.
