Sliding Gates in Winnipeg: Everything You Need to Know

Sliding Gates Are One of the Most Requested Products We Build

If your property backs onto a back lane or you are looking for vehicle access to your yard without a traditional swing gate, a sliding gate is almost certainly the right solution. They are practical, secure, and built to handle Winnipeg winters better than almost any other gate style. Here is everything you need to know before you decide.

How Does a Sliding Gate Work?

A sliding gate runs along a track parallel to the fence line, rolling to one side to open rather than swinging outward. This means you do not need clearance in front of or behind the gate for it to operate. The gate rolls smoothly on heavy-duty wheels or rollers mounted at the base and is guided by a top rail or post to keep it stable and straight as it moves.

Why Sliding Gates Work So Well on Winnipeg Back Lanes

Back lanes in Winnipeg are often narrow, and swing gates can be difficult to operate when there is limited space between the fence and a parked vehicle or the lane itself. A sliding gate eliminates that problem entirely. It opens parallel to the fence, keeping the lane and the yard clear while still providing a wide opening for vehicles, trailers, or equipment.

They also handle winter conditions better than swing gates. Snow and ice buildup in the path of a swing gate can make it impossible to open in the middle of a Winnipeg winter. A sliding gate avoids that issue by moving along the fence line, where snow can be cleared more easily and does not block the operation of the gate.

What Size Sliding Gate Do You Need?

The width of your sliding gate depends on what you need to drive through it. A standard vehicle needs a minimum opening of around 10 to 12 feet to pass through comfortably. If you are pulling a trailer, boat, or larger equipment, you may want a wider opening of 14 feet or more. We measure the opening carefully during the estimate visit and build the gate to suit your specific access needs.

Sliding Gates and Manitoba Winters

A sliding gate that is not built correctly will give you problems in the winter. The posts need to be set deep and solid so the gate stays level and rolls smoothly, even after frost heave has done its work on the surrounding ground. The hardware needs to be heavy-duty enough to handle the weight of the gate through years of cold-weather expansion and contraction. At A+ Fences, we build every sliding gate with these factors in mind from the start.

Can a Sliding Gate Be Automated?

Yes. Sliding gates are well-suited to automation, and many of our clients choose to add a motor and remote system to their gate. This is a separate product installed by an automation specialist, but we built the gate and posts to accommodate it. If you know you want an automated gate, let us know at the quoting stage so we can factor that into the build.
