Limestone Gravel vs Concrete Fence Posts in Winnipeg: Which Actually Holds Up?

In Winnipeg, wood fence posts set in compacted limestone gravel generally outlast posts set in concrete, because gravel lets water drain away from the post instead of holding it against the wood. Concrete forms a solid collar underground that traps moisture and gives frost something to grab and lift, which is how posts start leaning after a few Manitoba winters. Set deep enough and packed properly in layers, limestone gravel locks a post in place while still letting the ground move around it. That is the method I use on every wood fence I build.


If you have ever asked a fence contractor in Winnipeg whether they set posts in concrete, you have probably heard concrete described as the stronger option. It sounds right. Concrete is hard, it is permanent, and it feels like it should hold better than a hole packed with rock.


It does not work out that way here. Manitoba puts fences through something most of the country does not: a frost line that runs down roughly four feet, and a ground surface that lifts and settles every single year. In that environment, what matters is not how hard the material around the post is. It is what the water does.


So here is the honest breakdown, including the cases where concrete genuinely is the better call.

Should fence posts be set in concrete or gravel?

For wood fence posts, compacted gravel is the better default. Concrete adds rigidity you do not actually need and traps moisture you cannot get rid of.


Think about what a concrete collar is. It is a bowl. You pour it around a wood post, it cures, and now the post is sitting inside a container with no drainage path at the bottom. Every rainfall and every spring melt puts water into that bowl, and the only way out is evaporation or through the wood itself. Gravel does the opposite. Water runs through the voids between the stones and keeps going down, past the bottom of the post, into the soil below.


Why do concrete fence posts fail in Winnipeg winters?

Because frost needs something to push against, and a concrete collar gives it a large, rigid surface to grip. Once the soil around it freezes and expands, it lifts the collar and the post together.

This is called adfreezing, and it is the reason a fence can look perfect in October and be visibly out of line by May. The concrete does not crack. The post does not rot through in one season. The whole assembly simply gets jacked upward a bit each winter and does not fully return. Do that four or five times and you have a fence line that waves.

Gravel gives frost far less to work with. Loose, angular stone does not bond to the post the way a poured collar does, so when the ground around it heaves, the post is much more likely to stay where it was put.


Does limestone gravel really hold a post as firmly as concrete?

Yes, when it is the right material, the right depth, and compacted in layers rather than dumped in all at once. Underground holding power comes from friction and compaction, not from a hard shell.

The part people skip is the compaction. Gravel poured loosely into a hole is not the same job as gravel added in lifts and tamped down between each one. Angular crushed limestone locks together when it is compacted, and that interlock is what resists movement. If a contractor tells you gravel posts wobble, what they are usually describing is a gravel post that was never properly packed.


How deep do fence posts need to go in Manitoba?

Deep enough to sit below the frost line, which in the Winnipeg area runs down to roughly four feet. A post that stops short of that is sitting inside the layer of ground that moves every year.

Depth is the single biggest variable in whether a fence stays straight, and it matters more than the backfill argument does. A four-foot post set in gravel and a four-foot post set in concrete will both outperform a two-foot post set in either one. If you only get one thing right, get the depth right. This is a large part of what separates a fence that still looks new in year ten from one that starts leaning in year three, which I get into further in the difference between a good fence and a great fence.


Is concrete ever the right choice?

Yes. Steel posts do not rot, so the moisture argument disappears entirely, and certain heavy gate posts benefit from the extra rigidity concrete provides.

On chain link and ornamental fencing, the posts are galvanized steel. There is nothing there for trapped water to rot, so the calculation changes and concrete becomes a reasonable option. The same logic can apply to a very wide or very heavy gate post carrying a lot of leverage. Anyone who tells you it is always gravel or always concrete is selling you a rule instead of an answer.


Real Scenarios: Which One Sounds Like You?

Your fence is only four or five years old, and posts are already leaning.

That timeline usually points to post depth or drainage rather than material quality. Push on a leaning post near ground level. If it moves as one solid unit including the soil around it, you are looking at frost movement. If it feels soft at the base, moisture has been sitting against the wood.


You are collecting quotes and one contractor lists concrete as a premium upgrade.

Ask them how deep the posts go and how the hole is backfilled and compacted. Those two answers tell you far more about the fence you are going to get than the word concrete does.


You are on a newer lot where the yard was backfilled during construction.

Disturbed backfill settles for years after a house goes up. This is common across newer areas like Sage Creek, Bridgwater and South Pointe, and it makes getting down to undisturbed ground below the frost line even more important than usual.


You already have a chain link fence, and someone told you the same rules apply.

They do not. Steel posts and wood posts fail for different reasons, and the setting method should reflect that.


Frequently Asked Questions

Will a gravel-set post wobble in soft ground?

Not if it is compacted correctly and set to full depth. Softness at the surface matters much less than what is happening four feet down, which is where the post is actually anchored.


What kind of gravel should be used?

Angular crushed limestone. The sharp edges are the point, because they lock against each other under compaction. Rounded pea gravel rolls instead of locking, and it does not do the same job.


What happens to the old concrete when a fence gets replaced?

It comes out of the ground with the old posts during removal, and the new holes get dug fresh. Leaving old concrete in place forces the new post line into the old post spacing, which is rarely where you want it.


Does the wood itself matter as much as how the post is set?

Both matter, but they solve different problems. Pressure-treated lumber resists rot from the inside out. Proper drainage keeps water from sitting against it in the first place. You want both, not one instead of the other.


How long should a properly set wood fence last in Winnipeg?
